Note - the sections refers to using a flashlight as a visual aid for long-distance navigation, for torches recommeded for map reading see the Backpacking/Camping section and for torches recommended for viewing instruments in the case of backlight failure please see the Aviation or Water Sports section.
The functionaility needed for this task is similar to that of the models discussed in the Search and Rescue section. A torch to be used as a visual navigation aid must have a high output, capable of lighting up distant features of landscape. All of the torches in this section are powered by (or have the option of being powered by) 123A Lithium batteries with the exception of the 10X Dominator. The 10X Dominator should only be considered for Navigation use if the user will have the ongoing ability to charge the unit such as vehicle-based travel through remote, unmapped or isolated areas.
A good torch will enable the user to walk, drive or sail on a bearing in the dark much easier as once they have a visual observation to base their direction of travel on they can walk toward that landmark/feature as though it was daylight.
The torches recommended for Navigation and Distant Illumination use are listed after this Buyers Guide article or you can click the following links for in-depth information about each of the torch models -
