Enhanced spotlight capability is the primary requirement of a Search and Rescue torch. A powerful beam that is capable of piercing deep into the dead of night can save vital time when searching for a missing person and ultimately make the difference between life and death.
The two torch features most important to achieving an enhanced spotlight capabililty are light output and reflector size. We need to emit as large an amount of light as we can to light up the night sky, and the effect of a larger reflector (2.5" or greater) is that it throws the beam from the torch a much greater distance. The combination of high lumen output and a large reflector generates an intense beam that can shoot into the distance for several hundred yards, sometimes further.
For this application we must look to the high-end Surefire models, many of which will be from the military-orientated Millenium Series torches as these models meet the demanding requirements that search and rescue tools have to be capable of.
