Torches for use on construction sites or for inspecting industrial processes should be lightweight, easily carried or holstered and either have a good runtime from a single set of batteries or be rechargeable.
On the building site, being able to check the quality of building materials, fixtures and fittings is essential and due to the nature of the role, this inspection will often happen indoors before an electricity suppy has been installed. In most situations a high output device will not be necessary, however, on major projects containing large enclosed spaces it might be necessary to have a beam with more impact. The torch must also be compact and easily holstered for fitting to tool belts or simply to meet the need of an everyday carry tool that can fit in a pocket.
Industrial inspection is another iportant role with similar requirements to that of the construction site. No matter how brightly lit the factory is, there will always be tooling and machinery where the normal lighting of the factory doesn't quite reach, and clear visual inspection is only possible with a convenient and reliable hand held torch. Again, as in the case of the construction worker, the industrial inspection role will require that the torch can be carried easily at all times, possibly holstered or kept in a pocket.
For both roles the torches should be able to be carried all day, every day, in a convenient manner and pereferably the worker should not even notice the fact they have an additoinal, very useful piece of kit on their toolbelt or in their pocket. Where previously it would have required the employee to carry a large, heavy and cumbersome 2D or 3D cell flashlight, with a compact Surefire in their toolkit they will hardly even notice that it's there.
The torches recommended for Construction and Industrial use are listed after this Buyers Guide article or you can click the following links for in-depth information about each of the torch models -
