Whether you are a Pilot or Cabin Crew, the best torches for use while flying will be lightweight, compact and they will be either dual output or have an option for coloured output. A pocket clip is also an advantage to allow for easy storage and retrieval of the torch when in a seated position.
The preferred option is to have dual output, thus allowing close proximity work in a dim light scenario without impairing one's adapted night vision, then a high beam that can reach from the cockpit to the leading edges of the wings for visual inspection. A coloured output, such as red, will respect your night adapted vision, however, it will not perform as well as a white light torch at distance.
When Surefire designed the A2 Aviator it was made to enable commercial airliner pilots and maintenance crew to visually inpsect the tail fin of a Boeing 747 jumbo jet from the ground, while at the same time having a low-beam option so that the Pilot could use the torch for short-range illumination in the cockpit without impairing his/her night-adapted vision. As the A2 Aviator has been designed specifically with that kind of functinality in mind, it is the top recommended torch for this role.
The torches recommended for Aviation Pilot and crew use are listed after this Buyers Guide article or you can click the following links for in-depth information about each of the torch models -
